review 1: Became absolutely obsessed by this book. Compelling characterization of Emily... It's a **fictional** biography, so that said I was completely willing to set aside academic/documentary quarrels with whether or not she did indeed have the love affair that is the centerpiece of this story. The background of social health issues from the early effects of the textile industries, as well as the workers' conditions in the coal regions were, I thought, quite interesting and welcome contexts for this depiction of the Brontes' world. This author takes Haworth out of its usual mystical realm and emphasizes instead the too real atmosphere of fear and menace caused by the miasma of contagion from the festering water supply. One of the tragic centerpieces of the novel is death of a ... morecentral character from cholera. (to be cont.)
review 2: The focus is on Emily Bronte, not Charlotte (who has long stolen the spotlight because she outlived her sisters), with a love story that Giardina suggests was the inspiration for Heathcliffe and Cathy. Having walked the moors and visited the Parsonage in Haworth I found Giardina's narrative true to the family story while suggesting an interpretation overlooked by most historians. I will recommend it to my Brit Lit students in January. less
