review 1: This was a tough one to rate. I wasn't sure I really enjoyed it, but kept listening because I hoped it would get less confusing, but it didn't. The story was being told in three different time periods, and listening to this as an audiobook was at first very difficult to keep track of which time period I was in. Then it got more confusing, but in a good way. The fact that there was PTSD in the Civil War and the reaction of society was interesting. In the end, I liked it, I didn't love it but was glad I'd made it to the end.
review 2: Interesting Civil War novel. Summerfield Hayes, 19-year-old Brooklyner and budding “base ball” star, enlists in the Union Army in late 1863 to escape family tension. He survives the horrific three-day Wilderness battle in ... morenorthern Virginia in May 1864 but is abandoned and lost until found and brought to a hospital in Washington in a mute posttraumatic condition. At the hospital, Walt Whitman is a frequent visitor helping to care for Summerfield and others on the ward, some hoping for recovery, some unable to even hope. Good story, characters, setting, and powerful war writing all the way through to the very emotional conclusion for Summerfield. less
