review 1: Having received Dete Meserve’s novel ‘Good Sam’ as a Library Thing Giveaway novel, I was intrigued by the idea of a Good Samaritan in LA giving away $100,000 to seemingly random individuals. Kate Bradley, a news reporter for Channel Eleven, discovers the Good Sam and the reason for the cash gifts. As she tracks down the elusive Good Sam, Kate also finds resolution to her own fears of trusting another, overcoming a phobia, and realizing true love. Although this story seems a bit contrived, I was touched by the integrity and the valiant acts of heroism demonstrated by Eric Hayes, captain of the fire department search and rescue team. Typically I’d give a story such as this one three stars, but because it was heartfelt and generated a few tears as I read it, I thou... moreght that it deserved the four star designation. However, before this book is released for final publication, it needs a thorough edit, as there were a few grammatical errors in the text.
review 2: I received this book as part of Goodreads Giveaways. This book was a good, quick read. It didn't take me long at all to finish it. It was one of those stories that were straight to the point and therefore there weren't a lot of detours in order to get to the end - the story focused on one thing and one thing only, so it was a page turner. One of my biggest qualms with this book is the way that characters are described. To start with, Kate states that someone once told her that she wasn't 'reporter material,' and the reason for that was because she wasn't conventionally attractive. What, in Kate's mind, made her not unconventionally attractive? The fact that she didn't have blonde hair. Yet another story where the author hates on the blondes. Therefore I wasn't surprised when I looked up the author and sure enough, brunette. What gets me more is that the character continues to state that she has eyes that look great on camera and straight white teeth. If that's not conventionally attractive, I don't know what is. I think a more interesting premise would be if Kate had a stutter or if she was a different race or... anything other than the fact that she's a brunette. Having a certain hair colour does not make one oppressed. The author also uses Susan as the jealous bitch of a reporter who only does gossip, and therefore is a bad, snooty person. There's not much more to Susan other than the fact that she's blonde. The book isn't really what I was expecting - it's more of a romance novel than anything else. It was engaging and interesting, but the moment one small detail was given away I was able to predict the rest of the book, much to my disappointment.I think that the book could do with another edit as there were a handful of grammatical and tense errors. Nothing huge, but still there. Overall, a good book, but I'd recommend it more for those who like romance books rather than anything else you might expect from this one.SPOILERS AFTER HEREOkay, so the thing is... I personally have the impression that Kate was more in love with the idea of Good Sam than she was with either of the men.At one point Kate believes that Jack only loves the idea of being with her - well, that's how I feel about Kate with Good Sam. Before she had any suspicions of who it might be, she immediately doesn't believe the skinny kid who comes in and said it was him. Why? Because he didn't look like George Clooney. He wasn't attractive, and that's what she wanted. Therefore she began to fall in love with Jack again because she believed him to be Good Sam, and then she fell for Eric for the same reason. less
