review 1: So I put off reading this for a few years but I can now say it wasn't as traumatic as I anticipated. Jamie's time in Helwater in Voyager was such a difficult one for me to read. His despair and desperate loneliness were palpable. When this book came out and I read it was set a few years into the Helwater days I couldn't think of anything worse to read. And unlike Voyager which had that magical scene on page 320 (yes, that number is burned in my brain) to look forward to, this was a whole book of Jamie without Claire. Well while it still was heartbreaking to read, this was a great insight into the Jamie and John relationship. I love John and seeing Jamie through his eyes was quite special. I felt his longing and desperation for something that he knew could never be and my e... morempathy and understanding grew for him. I also loved that beautiful father and son relationship that meant Jamie would surrender his chance at freedom in exchange for Willie - always the man of such honour and integrity to the end. A really nice glimpse into characters that feel like home to me.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. At first I thought I couldnt care less about the minor character that is John Grey and told myself that I would probably not be interested in reading books solely about him, but this book was as much if not more about Jaime Fraser then Mr Grey himself, and a very interesting insight into a short period of his life while he lived at Helwater. I havent read the 2 books prior to this one as I read on DG's website that they were not sequels and could be read out of order. I'm glad I did and I recommend it to anyone who love the Outlander series.**** to read after Voyager (#3) less

It is about Jamie as much as Lord John, so it is a great story.
