review 1: This is my second time through the series -- prepping for the 2014 release and the television adaptation (finally!). Love the whole series but Drums of Autumn can't be topped. Cannot wait to see it brought to life onscreen. Gabaldon's descriptions of the Colonies, the Scottish settlements there, and the Mohawks are just brilliant. Complex characters -- I found myself liking Stephen Bonnet for just a moment -- and complex relationships: Brianna and Jamie, Jamie and Frank, Claire in the role of a mother, Brianna and Lord John, Ian -- I could plop my own family into these roles, so richly does she describe the complexities of human emotion and interaction. The theme of fathers and surnames is especially poignant. I could read Drums over and over and still find something new. ... moreWell done. A perfect book in Drums, and an amazing series all around.
review 2: I love these books for the history -both Scotland, England, and US (they have taught me a lot more than high school ever did), the complexity of the relationships and characters. I love how the author makes you feel that you can smell the air the characters are breathing or feel the dew on the grass, the stickiness of the humid air. I know a lot of people say they are full of sex. For me that would be a turn off in a book - so I counted the pages in book 1. Of 500 pages-there were 10 pages of sex. 10 pages only. Just turn the page and move on. They can be violent-they are set in violent times. There can be some repetition (drives me nuts-but maybe this is a 5 or 6 paragraphs in each book) - this is done so people can pick up the book at any point-they don't have to start at book one. To me it's not about romance - it's about the relationships. Husband/wife. Inlaws to son-in-law. Parents to daughter. Mother to daughter. Over a period of time the character John Grey is developed - he becomes more prominent in the latter books. (The John Grey books though aren't as good - wouldn't recommend them at all). I'm reading these books for the 9th time - I go through them every 18 months or so. They are so complex that they don't get boring. less
