review 1: Excellent book. Good read. Chronicles an institution's courageous yet unprepared move to bring black men onto a campus in the midst of the civil rights and black power movements. Among them was Clarence Thomas, but the story is really about a generation of black men whose presence and actions demanded that Holy Cross and other colleges do more than just admit them to historically white and exclusive colleges. Institutional structures much change is what the students really said. The heading is misleading. True, a "visionary priest" made a bold step, but how the students sought to change the college is the real story.
review 2: Excellent excellent book. Set in the late 60s, it tells the story of a priest at Holy Cross who decided the school needed to be i
... morentegrated. So he set out to find eligible black men across the country, offering them a free education in exchange for integrating the school. The book focuses on five men who went on to excel at their careers at the highest level, including author Edward Jones, NFLer Eddie Jenkins, lawyer Ted Wells, and future Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas. It delved into the lives of these men, as well as the efforts of the father to bring more black men to the school despite having little funding. I loved the book and recommend it to anyone with interest in Civil Rights, biographies, or good non-fiction of any kind. less
