review 1: I had never before read a “novelization of a movie”. I was hesitant because I believed the movie to be “approved” by the SEALs and therefore PR. Yet, I decided to read it because I had heard that a number of people had ghost written Clancy’s books and I thought I might find another author to follow i.e. Dick Couch or George Galdorisi. (I had never before read any of their works.)Much to my surprise, I REALLY enjoyed this book. The writing itself is not Pulitzer quality – but descriptive. It's in the style Clancy popularized and there's a lot of detail. If you're a devotee of military Spec Ops, this is a MUST read. Also, if you liked “Lone Survivor”, you’ll like “Act of Valor”.The more I read, the more I liked it. It’s much more that the shoo... moreting and firefights – although the book has EXCITING sequences – it provides a detailed examination of a SEAL squad, as well as its mobile presence/force projection – logics and support i.e. how it works. (Image… Helicopters, working off of carriers, picking up Navy river boats for combat river incursions!) In addition to an action novel, it provides insight on SEALs as people – their families and civilian life. If this info is accurate – and I believe it is – it’s wow, after wow, after wow! SEALs are Olympic athletes that kill people got a living... Warriors. The story is predictable – but SOOOOOO HEROIC! And I do enjoy heroic stories. The world needs more “good guys”. It makes me feel good to have men such as these protecting my family
review 2: The book that I choose to read was, "Act of Valor" by Dick Couch. The book is based off of the story of a group of Navy Seals that go on rescue missions behind enemy lines. Dick Couches reason for writing this book was to inform people about what really happened in those events and the stress and pressure that's on the Seals. The point of view in this book is third person becuase the author uses words like they and him. The style of this book is very action packed and kind of relates to people that might like first-person shooter video games because of the description when the Seals kill a bad guy. You can kind of picture what happens in your mind. The theme of this book is kind of to live your life and not worry about death or not to fear it. It says to be the best person you can be because you never know when your time might come. This example of a theme is in this book because the Seals live two completely different lives. One is the father, husband figure that they play when their back home in the United States, and the other is the tough, cocky soldier that they play when their out on a mission. The point that the author was trying to get across or say was that in life, you will have to very quickly be able to switch between two personalities in order to accomplish something. The style of this book is description and a little bit of an entertaining read because while its explaining the events of the acts that took place, it also adds a little bit of a factor that gives you the chills at some parts during your reading. Overall I think that this book was a very good read that matches the last book I read, "Black Hawk Down". What makes this book so good is that it relates to someone who likes first-person shooters because you can picture what is actually happening. I especially loved how this book kept you on your feet and guessing about what would happen next. After the Seals rescued the first person I was hoping that it was going to end with that because I didn't want any more of the Seals to die because I loved their characters. There wasn't really much about this book that I didn't like other than when my favorite characters died. As with most war book I read, I sometimes find it hard to keep track of who is who without any real picture of them, and there is no different voices just my own reading the book. If I could change one thing about this book it would be the characters that die. I would make it to where none of them died because in all honesty, it's sad. This book is similar to "Black Hawk Down" because in both books, the teams are on a snatch and grab mission to get in and out as quickly as they can. less
