review 1: I found this book to be a fast, enjoyable read. The main character is flawed but reasonably likeable and there are a few twists that may surprise some readers. It has a modern Indiana Jones feel to it with an interesting take on ancient myths, alchemy, and magic, putting a more scientific and rational spin on them. I often read this type of book and find that the writer often takes the "it can't be explained rationally" take on supernatural beliefs and events, whereas this one goes in a different direction. Both views are equally enjoyable, I just like to see that a writer isn't taking the obvious way out. It seemed to me that the spiritual and religious beliefs depicted in the book were also handled delicately and with respect, though I am far from an authority on the mat... moreter. The descriptions of war and violence seemed authentic and tragic and may be a trigger for some people.
review 2: The protagonist in this book is such a whiner and having a serious pity party that it's hard to feel bad for him at any time in the entire novel. I felt worse for his dead brother for having to put up with such a jerk for so long. In addition, there were some unresolved loose ends near the end when he starts asking about his life growing up in Turkey - and they just hang there. Ugh...don't waste your time on this one. less

Gave up after 80 pages. The opening two pages were promising but it was downhill from there.

Couldn't help continually editing as I read - too long, too much detail.
