review 1: As evidenced from the bibliography, the author referenced a sizable number of books and papers in research for this book, trying, no doubt, to paint as realistic a picture as possible of the subject. Unfortunately, this book comes across like a paint by numbers work of fiction -- it's formulary with the lines showing through, the color palette limited. The premise is good, if not enticing, but there's just not enough depth here; there's too much lazy writing.I just finished the book yesterday, and while I could tell you the names of the characters, I couldn't tell you what really made up any of them. That the author took such an outside-in approach to these characters -- and really what feels like the whole story -- is just too bad.

... moreeally wanted to read this one, but decided to take a risk (I think I picked it up on sale). It was just okay. It started off very slowly. Although the pace did pick up later in the book, I felt like I was marking time to get to the end. The main character was not very likable and seemed amoral at some times and just extremely self-involved at others. Wasn't surprising that a lot of his "friends" stabbed him in the back, since they seemed to be cut from the same cloth. Thought that I would find all the Mesopotamian history to be interesting, but instead just found it somewhat tiresome and distracting. I believe this is the first in a series. I won't be following up with any subsequent books. It just didn't grab me. less

It was ok, but some of the "big twists" were fairly predictable.
