review 1: I have to say, this is the best crime book I've read in years. Okay, it starts off a little slowly, but the atmosphere is good, and the plot gets ever more intriguing. I can normally guess the villain(s) of the piece and their method long before the end, but in this case the various twists kept me both fooled and yet eager to find out more. Death on a Galician Shore - well worth getting hold of this book, and any future translations of Villar's work (in this case the translation was done by Sonia Soto).
review 2: Inspector Leo Caldas approaches crime solving like peeling an onion - methodical, one thin veiled layer at a time. Death on a Galician Shore, penned by Domingo Villar, translated into English by Sonia Soto, is murder mystery intrigue at a much slower p... moreace than that of typical American novels. In which I found myself reading impatiently in the onset. However, after feeling out the rhythm of the book I found it a refreshing change of pace. And too, the story taking place in a fishing village off the coast of Spain, with superstitious old salts meandering at every turn, the "village" pace matched the crime solving pace. Another surprising delight...the plot was clever, keeping one guessing; like ocean waves: cresting, ebbing, cresting, ebbing.... I really enjoyed the novel and main character, Inspector Caldas. less
