review 1: I read this short story collection a while back and I was very put off by it. "The Angel Esmeralda" made me want to never read anything by Don DeLillo ever again. I had not actually read anything else by DeLillo at the time, and let me tell you, if you intend to introduce yourself to his work by reading his short fiction first, don't. I did not like most of the stories in this collection, most of the characters talked in strange or inhuman ways. They finished each others sentences constantly like what they said was rehearsed, not at all like real human beings. I only liked one story. I do not remember what it was called now. Go read one of DeLillo's novels, they are much better.
review 2: I rarely read short stories. I would never have picked this one up if we
... more hadn't been reading it for book club. Did I like it? Not really. Am I glad I read it? Very much.Overall I didn't really enjoy any of the stories. I am glad I read this collection because the author is an amazing writer. The descriptions were fabulous, so life-like and detailed. I think the writing was well crafted but not over whelming.Stories I did not like: Creation, Human Moments in WWIII, The Runner, Baader-MeinhofStories I did like: The Ivory Acrobat, The Angel Esmeralda, Hammer and Sickle, The Starveling* Story I did not finish: Midnight in DostoevskyWill I ever read any of DeLillo's other work? Probably not. *(amazing prose, ridiculous story) less

DeLillo's prose is concise, precise, like a city street grid. The title story is wonderful.

Especially perfect is the one focused on Bronx-based nuns trying to navigate blight.
