review 1: I wanted this to be SO MUCH better than it was. Getting some historical context for the time, place and characters of GWTW was enjoyable, but the characterizations were unfortunately shallow and the narrative was a relentless chain of this-happened-then-this-happened-then-this and so on. Made for a slog. I only persevered as long as I did for fan-girl reasons (because I knew Tara and Scarlett would coming along eventually). I also found the sudden change in perspective to first person from Mammy's point of view very jarring (but a vast improvement in characterization). Why do this only for the latter third of the book? It would have been appropriate from the beginning and likely have enriched the storytelling.
review 2: I expected much more than I got. I know i
... moret was an authorized sequel...and I'm sure certain requirements must be met. It just didn't thrill me. I wasn't left with opened eyes, just a disappointed pull at my mouth. I wanted to know what Mammy really thought, I wanted to know who she was on the inside, and I got hints, but too much of the book was spent on the slanted angles of Solange's personality, which we know are reflected in Scarlett years later. Mammy Ruth is the knowing, glowing personality with whom we are familiar but I would have preferred seeing the inside of that personality, the part she is forced to hide from white folks as a cloak of subservience. less

I just didn't like the way it started, and I have so many other books waiting for me at the library.

I'll read anything that brings a little more Rhett Butler into my life.
