review 1: 2.5The editing could use a little work, and the story didn't really capture my attention. I did finish it, and it was an enjoyable enough read. I just don't need to read it again. The relationships in the story were enjoyable. I loved both the main characters. However, the story kind of started dragging towards the end. Plus there were... side issues (?) that didn't get resolved, only touched on; enough to make me wonder "What is that all about?". Perhaps she deals with those in other books. Not sure.
review 2: Donna Hatch is a new author for me. I knew “The Guise of a Gentleman” is #2 in a series, but frankly it sounded more interesting to me than #1, and the rave reviews were impressive.Well I absolutely enjoyed this wild ride through Regency England wit
... moreh the sweetly innocent widow, Elise Berkley, and her son Colin, becoming entangled with the secret world of pirates. It was enthralling, to the point that I got very involved with them and the mysterious Jared Amesbury/Black Jack. It captured my attention immediately and with introductions put forth to us readers like the following, how could I not want to know them better: Page 83 – “Something about Jared Amesbury did not add up. One moment, he seemed a heartless philanderer. The next, a perfect gentleman. Then a playful rogue peeked through that poised demeanor. ….Even when his stance appeared relaxed, he remained motionless, alert, watchful. He moved with silent, predatory grace, every motion of his body carefully calculated. He never made an unconscious move. Even his casual air seemed planned, as if he were a highly skilled actor playing a role.”And of our heroine Elise, page 103-104 – (Jared) “’I’ve discovered intelligence does not only smile on one gender. In fact, women seem to have a certain intuition that often eludes men.’ Mrs. Berkley turned her head and looked him fully in the eye. Speechless, he beheld her radiant beauty. For a fleeting moment, a haunted look entered her eyes, as if something caged begged for freedom. Perhaps she was trapped alone in her world of etiquette. Then she shut the expression behind a carefully constructed mask of serenity. ‘You have a generous attitude, Mr. Amesbury.’”So with these fascinating personalities, the main characters launch into a wild ride of mystery, intrigue, danger on the high seas, and of course - romance. (And btw, clean enough to recommend to a teenager.) The conclusion overall was good, and definitely satisfying, but I will say the consequence of Jack Black at the end was a bit wacky. My reaction was “Really??”Nevertheless, Donna Hatch is an author I will definitely read again – I’ll even go read #1 now…and then jump to #3… Very well done! less

This book was kind of ridiculously over-the-top, but enjoyable nonetheless.
