review 1: The romance of this story was beautiful. I loved both Kai and Jeniah ... as well as a lot of other characters in the book. My problem is with the a vast amount of the content that made my skin crawl. First was the graphic violence. That I could probably even over look as I know the reality of war is brutal ... but add to that the many pagan references, moderate suggestive themes, attempted rape, and satanic rituals, and I just couldn't do it. I wish I could segregate the romance out of the rest of the book because the relationship between the two main characters itself was a 5 star story, but sadly, I cannot. At the end of the day, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
review 2: I enjoyed this book, but only as a light and fluffy something to help me survive the ... morelatest migraine. The premise is wonderful, there's some fun, witty dialogue, and it kept me interested. But somehow the world and its characters all seemed kind of...flat. I don't really know what the problem was, except a definite lack of depth of character and world building. It leans more towards romance than fantasy. There were parts that made me roll my eyes, or think "come on, please think/do something other than drooling over your love interest!". So read this if you want a fun romance in the shape of a fantasy novel. If what you want is a rich, beautifully woven fantasy that happens to includes a romance (which is what I was really wanting, and what I feel like this book is trying to be) read Elantris, Daughter of the Forest, The Name of the Wind, Fire, The Thief series, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, The Demon King, etc. less
