review 1: I had to read this book for a class I took on entrepreneurship. I have to say that for the most part, it's not worth it because of the author's voice. The book is basically a compilation of stories from people he's had on his tv show, interspersed with his business stories and advice, as well as advice from other people he has or currently works with. If you're going to read it, read it for the true rags-to-riches stories included and the advice from other people, because his opinion isn't worth it. But really, he just compiled other people's stories and generously drizzled his input on top like a yucky, all-permeating, loss-of-appetite-inducing sauce.I could not stand his voice in this book! He comes off as a spoiled, rich boy who got fired by his dad once (BOO FREAKING H... moreOO) and that was a turning point in his life. Here he was, a 26-year-old Ivy League school graduate, and he got fired by his dad because he wasn't doing his job well enough. I'd fire him too if I had paid for his education and he was pouting about the job I had just given him at MY company!Apparently he had the smarts, but he just needed to do something that he outrageously loved instead of a normal job. Whatever. I can understand not wanting to do a regular desk job, but a lot of times things don't work out right away, so he just came off as a spoiled brat with a large lack of gratitude and patience who threw a fit so his dad gave him the company instead of selling it (SPOILER ALERT). Anyway, he turned out wildly successful and found something he loved to do and that gets his heart pumping. Kudos. The main message I got from this book and his "encouragement" was that to be successful, you had to have a great idea and then just do it and you become successful! I mean, the stories were nice, like Paula Dean starting out with close to nothing, and it shows that anything is possible. What got me though was the author's voice, like I said before. I was unable to relate to his experiences at all. He sees getting fired by his dad as this big trial and turning point in his life, and maybe it was for him, but I was unable to relate because it seemed just a smidge detached from reality. He's never had nothing and he's never had to give up everything for one last chance to keep your head above water, like many of the stories in the book talk about. He takes the principles learned from the stories and tells you what to get out of them. Like he's ever experienced anything like those stories.I think watching the show is probably better (wouldn't personally know) because you would hear the stories from the actual people themselves without reading it in his voice.Anyway, I would not recommend this book! It has a few good tips and resources to look at, but really, in the age of the Internet you don't need to buy a book to find out the next step--all you need to do is a little research on the web. And wading through his writing style is at least semi-tortuous.
review 2: This was more of a motivational book then practical, full of things you could apply to your life/business right now kind of thing. Also it applies more to people who are inventing some new product or coming up with a brand new never thought of service. He comes across as really cocky, which he readily admits he is. He also uses some foul language which is completely unnecessary in a book like this. less
