review 1: Mommy's review from 11/13/11 - I want to see the child who is in the age range this book targets that understands - and gets the humor - in this book. Someone show me. Then I'll show you a child going on the reactions of the adult reader. This is packaged in a very unique way. I've never seen a book quite like it. But it needs to much more than that alone. The premise is a good one. Some parts of the book are even okay. But the writing is so repetitive in parts. Most parts aren't written in a manner than a 6 year old could understand. I can't know how many times I had to delete a word or phrase and insert something else so Julia would "get" the humor. And let it be known, my daughter is far ahead of her peers in reading and most, if not all, school subjects. She's currently ... morein kindergarten and doing 2nd and 3rd grade work. Now, she's no genius as far as I know and this will all even out as she gets older. The reason I bring it up is because she's in the age range this book targets. She's even more advanced than most at her age. Yet I don't think she could have "gotten" this without my help.Even with my help it was bland. This should have been rip-roaring hilarious. Look at the subject and what Cronin was trying to do! But it fails oh-so-miserably.I'd have loved to rate this differently. I'd have loved to have enjoyed reading this with Julia. We didn't finish it though and I'm actually surprised at some of the reviews. I really think the number of people who rate a book based on the author/newness of the book/something-other-than-the-book is growing. We've liked a few of Cronin's past book and I think a few have left us unsatisfied also. But this has to be the worst by far.
review 2: 32 months - I found this book quite funny but O was not at all impressed and we both found it longer and wordier than necessary. To me this is basically an adult book disguised as a kids picture book. Save it to read with your older kids who have more experience with you not at your best and have tiptoed around a few of your bad mood moments. When I asked O which Mom looked most like me she chose "Pleasant Yet Fried Around the Edges Mom"... Now that's funny! less

Funny and cute, but definitely a picture book targeted for adults. Specifically moms. Duh.
