review 1: It was depressing! They are so close friends they decide to take each others sons as lovers? What kind of mother is ok with her best friend having a sexual relationship with her son. They do this for a number of years and then decide it would be best for their sons to find girls their own age. Needless to say it emotionally scared both sons. They do find women their own age and get married and have kids but Ian, Lil's son, is totally screwed up from the relationship he had with Roz, Lil's best friend. The book became so depressing that I couldn't finish it.

... moret and now, some 20 years later, I have. This story was a novella and only took an hour to read, but I was disappointed in the rushed disjointed telling of the story, and it WAS telling, not showing. Fascinating characters and I love Lessing's psychological truths but she is capable of much more than this novella offered. I am going to try Briefing for a Descent Into Hell now, and we shall see how that goes. less
