review 1: The premise for this novella was interesting: two women who have been best friends since the age of five become attracted to each other's sons and end up in sexual relationships with them from the age of seventeen until their early thirties.I liked the book. It moved along at a fast pace and certainly kept my interest. However, the characters lacked depth and I didn't feel any emotion for them. This was probably due to the fact that it was a 70-page novella, but that only makes me feel like Lessing should have made this into a full-length novel. With even 100 more pages she could have fleshed out the characters a bit more and perhaps provided more detail about the relationships. I don't need graphic sexual detail, but it would be nice to get more about the physical attr... moreaction rather than "they went into the bedroom". Without even a description of a passionate kiss, I was left a little empty and almost puzzled as to why the boys would remain so strongly attracted to the mothers for all those years. I did think she did an excellent job in detailing the depth of friendship between the two women, and acknowledging the bonds some women have. When I turned the final page I was disappointed that it had ended so soon.
review 2: I originally picked this up off of a 'books to movies' display at work and found myself intrigued with the synopsis. The plot itself is odd and a bit strange enough to capture initial attention, and the first 10 or so page solidified my interest enough to finish the book. Granted, it's only about 70 odd pages, so it was a very quick read. The writing is gorgeous and gave me a very "beach" vibe while reading it. Amazing for such detail and setting development in such a small amount of text, but while reading I felt like I knew the beach where it all began and I was watching the story evolve from the sidelines. I personally would have enjoyed a little more length to this, but am content with trying some of the author's other work. I am also interested in seeing the movie version after reading this, if only because my initial reaction to the actress chosen is one of confusion. Though both incredible actors, they don't really fit the image I developed of the characters, so I'm interested in seeing the interpretation. less
