review 2: Truthfully, I was given this book by a friend, but couldn't read it. Lessing's The Golden Notebooks is one of my favorit books--probably not one I will read again, as it's very long and complex (maybe a bit like Wolfe's Look Homeward Angel for women--something you have to read when you are young and ripe for it). If you should read Wolfe by about 26, you
... more(women at least)should read Lessing in your thirties. The Four-Gated City is also really interesting. So Lessing, some of whose work is deeply depressing (Don't read The Summer Before the Dark if you tend toward depression over aging!)But anyway Lessing seems like such a weighty writer to me--and evidently became very crabby, wrote sci fi stuff of little interest to me...so I just couldn't wrap my head around the idea of a cat book. And I am a cat lover, at least of Inish and Donnelly. less

As a Doris Lessing fan and a crazy cat lady I had to read this endearing without being sentimental.
