review 1: I absolutely loved this one! I'm getting close to having read all of TenNapel's works and this is one of my favourites. A lot of his work is geared to YA or adult but this one is very suitable for middle grade. A hilarious over-the-top romp as a zoos animals are transformed into hideous mutants from an ancient tribal curse. TenNapel's often used father/son theme is present but in a much more low key sense than usual as Ty deals with a deceased military father and living up to a preconceived idea of "hero". This story is just plain fun with likeable characters but it also has some meaningful moments of emotion and in between the fart jokes one gets a real sense of empathy for the characters. Scholastic has been recently reprinting and colourizing a couple of TenNapel'... mores older out of print works and slightly editing them to be appropriate for younger children. I'd love to see them do this one next! And it wouldn't need any editing, either!
review 2: Mutant zoo animals running amok! My copy has a cooler cover with a picture of what once was a monkey with spikes in it's back and sharp teeth; the back has a shadowy elephant with one gleaming evil orange eye. (But the elephants are not all evil!) The story is pretty average: teen geek learns how to be a real hero (and impress the girl) but the artwork is really wonderful and there are some funny bits. For school visits though, just holding it up will be enough! less

Cliched and juvenile story. The two stars are just for the artwork.

A fun read, but not as good as Ghostopolis or Cardboard.
