review 1: OOPS! How did I get behind on his books? I love his poetry!I wish I could write poetry that didn't sound like a pathetic teenager. Here is one short snippet about the Troodon ..."Said to be brainy.Said to be bright. But what did it read? And what did it write?"Or here's one that shares some info on the Stegosaurus ..."Ste-go-SAUR-usHer-bi-VOR-ousDined on plants inside the forest.Bony plates grew on its back,Perhaps to guard it from attack."Must add this to our collection. And quick!
review 2: A lively collection of children's poems that bring to life the infamous dinosaurs. Beginning with a poem that lays out the various time periods, in which dinosaurs lived, it continues through the several poems that each describe one particular dinosaur and the features that
... moredistinguish it from all the others. At the beginning of each poem the young readers get a lesson on how to pronounce each dinosaur's name phonetically. Though it's very approachable for children, quite a few of the poems have questionable grammar (e.g. "made-up" words) that seems to indicate the writer's struggle in producing relevant content. For example, page 18: "Triceratops. Try-scare-a-tops. Try-wouldn't-want-to-dare-a-tops. Triceratops. Try-scare-a-tops. Beware-and-please-take-care-a-tops. Born with three great horns in place, Triceratops was in your face. " Page 11: "Seismosaurus: tremendous in size. Seismosaurus: stupendous lengthwise. Seismosaurus: could make the earth shake. Seismosaurus: as large as a lake. On the other hand, the artwork of the book is certainly the high point and showcases the author/illustrator's true talent. Done in gonache, collage, colored pencils, stencils, dinosaur dust, and rubber stamps on primed brown paper bags, it grabs your attention and has you scouring each two-page spread for the unusual and fascinating media that lay hidden. All together a good book, especially when you consider the content it tries to tackle. less
