review 1: Two themes are interwoven in this interesting book: the escapades of a serial killer and secondly, as the sub-title suggests, the development of forensics as an investigative tool. Latterly, a good deal of attention is also paid to the art of interrogative procedure. Written in a relaxed style, this is an easy and engaging read with the second theme being the more informative because the killings become repetitive after a while whereas the science (and art) show development over the years the book covers.
review 2: I loved this book as it was the interesting history of the French early forensics development meshed with true crime happening at the same time. I gave it only 4 stars ONLY because I am comparing it to "Devil in the White City" which is my 5 star
... moreruler. Anyone who reads or watches crime and forensic history will notice that so many French names come up: Bertillon, Lesueur, Locard.... This book interweaves the French forensic developments against the infamous "Vacher the Ripper" who was terrorizing France at that time. It proves to be an interesting and satisfying read. less

Not as good as The Poisoner's Handbook, but interesting nonetheless.
