review 1: 3.5 StarsI gave high praises for the first two books and this one has it's own merits. Third books are always the hardest to write I imagine as the author tries to tie up any loose ends and bring the story together for one final run. It is a fantastic story, and one that got me interested in Star Wars. But it does feel rushed and with a final poof like the firework that we were all expecting at the end didn't quite pop as planned. It's by no means a bad story but it does leave room for more to be desired.
review 2: Dynasty of Evil, by Drew Karpyshyn, is a book about the last of the Sith in the Star Wars universe after the war between the Jedi and the Sith. Karpyshyn wrote this novel in order to entertain fans of Star Wars and add on to the history of the se
... moreries. Star Wars began with the original six movies, but has since then grown with the addition of new stories by a variety of authors. One aspect of this novel that is important to the main plotline of the series is the revelation of why the Sith number only two when their enemies reach into the hundreds. These additions, including Dynasty of Evil, have allowed the series to continue on in its fame and given fans more to enjoy.Due to the perspective of this novel and the ideas held by its main characters, the theme of Dynasty of Evil is much darker than in most books. The ideas of strength and power are very important to the Sith, and they use this power as justification for their actions. They believe that the strong are meant to prevail, and that the weak are just tools to be manipulated. If one is not strong enough to survive, then they are not worthy of being leader. This is very evident in how leadership of the Sith is passed from one to another. A master was to take an apprentice and train them in the dark side. When the apprentice was strong enough, they would challenge their master for the title of Lord. After the battle was over, there would be only one left. They would then take on an apprentice of their own, and the cycle would begin again. Through this process, only the strong would survive, and it would ensure that the order only grew stronger as time passed. This emphasis on strength can also be seen in the code of the Sith, which states that “Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken.” To them, strength and power meant freedom and the ability to do as they pleased, which strongly influenced their actions. Dynasty of Evil, like many other books written for the same purpose, was written in a narrative format. The story is told through a logical chronology of events that also incorporates the views and thoughts of many of its characters. It begins with the introduction of its main characters and progresses onward from that point, using a variety of characters and situations to give the reader a full idea of the events taking place. For example, towards the middle of the novel, one main character goes off on a mission, leaving another character behind. At this point, the story splits between the two, which both keeps the story in a sensible order and gives background not available to the characters themselves, much like a narrator would, resulting in a more effective explanation of events to the reader. In my opinion, this was a very good book. It kept me guessing and brought in characters and ideas from all across the Star Wars universe. I am one who enjoys books that make connections to other, related novels. This book not only did this but also explained some things in the Star Wars series I had previously not understood. By using interesting connections and exciting scenes, this book kept me going to the last page and beyond. less
