review 1: This is an extremely well-written book about vim, and not only contains a plethora of tips for taking advantage of its many features such as motions, objects, registers, and the substitute function, but in essence takes you through each feature and really teaches it to you, so you not only have a cool little shortcut for your toolbelt, but an actual knowledge of that particular capability. Furthermore, while most of the book is focused on vanilla vim (a philosophy that I firmly agree with), the author does provide links to helpful plugins and outside tools where appropriate, so you can get a taste of the customization scene. I particularly appreciated that he tried to explain some of the innards of each plugin as he described them, which was something I didn't expect.I lea... morerned an incredible amount from this book, even though I read it cover to cover, which wasn't recommended by the author. If taking that approach, I highly recommend taking notes to refer back to later. My only (slight) complaint with the book is its tip-oriented format; Neil had to repeat himself many times, and while the constant references back to old tips or forward to upcoming ones were useful, they did distract from time to time. I understand this was due to my reading the book straight through, but I think a recommended reading order would have been helpful in establishing prerequisite knowledge for each chapter, or even just pointers to future tips which introduce features which will be discussed in the upcoming section. This would have kept the tip-oriented format while at times easing the writing's repetition. In any case, that is a very small gripe, and I wholeheartedly recommend this book, whether you read it tip-style or cover to cover. I still wouldn't call myself a vim expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I definitely learned a whole lot. Heck, if you don't have time, just read the first section! As a vim novice, it really changed how I use the editor.I'm not sure if I'll ever read a better book on a text editor. This fact is compounded with the fact that my only complaint with the book was because I read it in a manner which wasn't really intended, so I'm perfectly fine giving it the highest rating.
review 2: Written on a 'tip list' format, practical vim is a really comprehensive list of tips explaining how to do things with vim focusing mostly on real life cases. This book is very complete, but also very dense. If used for learning, it should be used as a reference and be consumed bit by bit, by getting each of this tips commited into muscle memory (if they fit you).To get the most out of this book, you should be initiated on vim, and at least use it everyday and have vimtutor dominated. If you are a complete beginner, start with vimtutor, and if you are an advanced user, read it, you will learn something for sure (hell even Tim Pope did) less

Excellent introduction to Vim, and contains a lot of gems even for the long-term casual user.

This book performs better as a reference. Reading it straight through doesn't make sense.
