review 1: This was a book club selection from Gail Carriger's online book club, and it did not disappoint. (This was especially nice since the local library and interlibrary loan systems didn't have a copy. I rarely buy books--so I'm extremely relieved that this was worth the money spent.) There is beautifully rich world building and a strong, likeable female protagonist set in a steampunk high fantasy setting. The world, with its cross between Roman and Victorian cultures, its rigid caste society, and its technological advances vs weaknesses was engrossing, if not appealing. There is romance, but it's of less importance than the mystery and adventure in the story. Taya is just a great heroine, engrossing, strong, imperfect, and relatable. Her relationship with the man with whom s... morehe falls in love (no spoilers) grows slowly and organically, and feels real. My only complaint about the book was the obviousness of more than half of the mystery. I was shouting at Taya and her friends half of the book who it was and what they needed to do. When that part was resolved, the remaining story felt a little anticlimactic. Hang in there, though--it turns out to be important for the direction of the next book--which, by the way, I've purchased already and can't wait to start. Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone open to fantasy.
review 2: This book has been edited and is being re-issued in September, and I highly recommend it. I do occasionally freelance for the publishing house, so I am probably slightly biased, :) but it has steampunk influence, a solid and intriguing mystery, compelling characters, and a lovely romance that isn't gratuitous in any way; all elements that I enjoy. I quite like it, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy! less
