review 1: I enjoyed this book a lot. The information about Diego Rivera's life was very factual and informational, but I like how the book extended into the history of South America compared to North America, both then and now. It really offers a historical point of view for children, and it may open a door into something they never realized they were interested in. There are so many extension activities that can be done with this book! I'll be saving this for a later date.
review 2: Diego Rivera: His World and Ours is a kid friendly (K-3) look at someone who loved painting as a kid then developed it into a lifelong passion which made him one of the most famous hispanic painters from the 20th century. Half of the book gives us a brief account of his journey as an artist
... more traveling to different countries to develop his skills before finally settling back home to paint for his homeland. The second half of the book compares the things he painted in his day to the things he might have painted in the modern age. The book ends with a nice upbeat finish calling on children to follow his footsteps. I really liked how the second half of the book showed the culture of South America in the 20th century then compared it to the times today. Not only does it give the ending a strong punch, but also opens the classroom to discussion about how clothes, customs, food, communities, technology has changed over time and how similar and different South American culture is to North American. The art in the book looks like it was drawn by a young kid artist, but interestingly it echoes the Aztec style of painting from ancient times. less
