review 1: I might give this book 5 stars if it weren't so heartbreaking to read. Is that unfair? I don't know, but a children's book about the inequities between "the North" and the rest of the Americas, and the injustices that take place in the course of attempting to come North, is bound to be painful to read. Thankfully this story ends on a happy but not perfect note. Definitely well written and I liked the art.
review 2: Opening: (Target group - intermediate grades)"Last night I was watching the news and there was a report about illegal immigrants and border crossing - on how dangerous it can be. Who can tell me what the words illegal and immigrant mean?" (Allow time for responses.)"So if illegal means forbidden by law and immigrant means a person who leaves one c
... moreountry for another, what does it mean when we say illegal immigrant? Is there a process an immigrant is supposed to go through before entering another country or can they just show up?" (Allow for discussion - add questions from social studies such as: who developed this process and why is it important to have this process in place? Can also ask, why do so many people want to come to America?)"How many of you just learned something new based off the conversation we just had?" (Raise hand) "That's great! I always learn something knew when I'm actively listening. As I watched the news report it got me thinking about a former student of mine who shared his uncle's "coming to America" story with my class a few years ago. He talked about the people who helped him along the way and about the people who were supposed to help him. It was a scary story that thankfully had a happy ending. This news report (and my former student's story) reminded me of book that came out last year titled, Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote: A Migrant's Tale, by Duncan Tonatiuh." (Hold up the book so students can see the cover.)"Although the characters in this book are not headed for America their experiences are the same as those who are. After I'm done with reading the book, I'll read the author's note at the very end of the text, then we will have a discussion about the different (animal) characters in the book and who they represent in real life. Each of you has a graphic organizer on your desk with the character names written on it. As you are introduced to the characters throughout the book, write down one or two things that will help you remember who they are. I'll be sure to pause during these times to allow enough time for you to write them down." (Begin reading.)RationaleI chose to use text-to-world for this connection because border crossing and illegal immigrants are two subjects that are constantly in the news. A lot of students' families are discussing these matters and/or living them. It was brought closer to home with the issues in Fremont, Nebraska. less
