review 1: Too convoluted for me, I kept getting confused about where we were and who was talking. Andrew's life is pretty sad, and I can understand him becoming convinced that it was all his fault, but I think that was just magical thinking to try to understand the tragedies that life threw at him. The last quarter of the book contained some very thinly veiled references to recent political figures that I found rather shocking in a work of fiction.
review 2: Odd. Andrew describes his life as an unplanned agent of bad luck, as a literary equivalent of the movie "The Cooler" in thought, if not in Vegas. ... morecked on. It's one of those books that reads somewhat interesting, but on reflection after finishing you feel you missed something. I'm not sure if I would ever recommend this to anyone I know. less

Not the best Doctorow that I've read but still a good read. Didn't expect the ending I must say.
