review 1: I was happy to have been attracted by the cover to read the synopsis of the book and later, to find it sitting on my nightstand. A wonderfully written monograph on the French approach to life, by an author who has a background in journalism. This makes for a seamless and entertaining read. The opinions in the book are interesting enough to warrant thinking about, though the reader may not always agree with them. There's no clear political intentions, just a pure anthropological exploration without pretention. It almost read like a novel or memoir, with very well placed facts throughout. It's a great review of French history (lots of stuff I didn't know there) and all things that make you swoon about the French. less
