review 1: Not so much a mystery, but more a psychological character study, Every Contact Leaves a Trace opens with the murder of Rachel Cardanine and then follows the actions of her devastated husband Alex Peterson as he tries to piece together the actions that led up to her death on the grounds of Worcester College in Oxford. The novel is very literary. It’s full of lies, deceits and half-truths, blackmail, sex and the poetry of Robert Browning. Recommended as a read alike for Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Donna Tartt’s The Secret History.
review 2: Loved it, its like the Secret History crossed with Rebecca, two of my favourite books! Set in Oxford, this story tells the tale of Alex, a reticent lawyer, and how his beautiful wife Rachel is mysteriously murdered on
... moreMidsummer's night at their old college when they are back visiting her old tutor. As Alex retraces the events of that night and their history at Oxford, he realises how little he knew of Rachel and is drawn into discovering how she died. This is beautifully written, and very literary, and really brings across the atmosphere at an elite Oxford/Cambridge college. The only things I didn't like about it were the slightly meandering storyline - it does take a long time to get going, and some of the digressions into Alex's past seem unnecessary to the central story, plus I wasn't sure I really believed the motivations of Rachel's old tutor and her godmother in hushing up all the events and creating a big mystery where there really didn't need to be one. less
