review 1: I did not like this book. I've pondered why that is and have two ideas. Most of the book consisted of the narrator relating other characters' unrealistic ally detailed descriptions of past events. In addition, I found nothing to like or understand in any of the main characters. The narrator's wife has been murdered and he is trying to find out who did it and why. Even at the end, he is still speculating; there are few hard facts. He also describes behaviors of his wife and her friends that are unpleasant and mean, difficult to understand, and never really explained. Perhaps this was just too subtle for me. On the whole, very unsatisfying. I kept reading to the end, hoping it would get better. Nope.
review 2: Shove a stick in my eye now, please. I know I am a l
... moreinear person. This book is driving me insane. I never know if we are in the present or the past because we flip back and forth, sometimes within the same sentence. It jumps all over. I have yet to find a likable character. For one of the few times in my life, I am intentionally not finishing a book. It was a purely painful read. I can't even keep going just to find out who did it or what terrible thing happened one summer. Not worth the mental anguish. less
