review 1: A friend gave me this book a week or so ago, and I read it in pretty much one day. I don't know the last book that brought me to tears, but this one left me damp-eyed and gazing into the distance, thinking of Africa and lonely for it and all the people there whom I love. At its heart, I suppose this is a book about loyalties: to the things we most value, to people and relationships, to principles. I am humbled by the way Morse wrote so well about all the people; given all the time I've spent in Africa, I've never dared to write anything about it beyond my own journal. She avoids the white savior trap and resists bringing the white & black male and female man characters into a romantic relationship, which I think is refreshing. Memorable line: the bitter heart eats its o... morewner.
review 2: Thanks to my friend Susan Bates for sending me signed copy of this book. The story unfolds beautifully on the page with lyrical language and fascinating characters. Though the switch in point of view caught me by surprise at first, never once did this story lessen its grip on me. It's one of those books that one cannot wait to finish, and yet, makes one miss reading it when the final page is turned. less

Very moving story. I continue to be amazed by man's inhumanity to man.

loved it. If you can love a book that speaks of such human inhumanity.
