MY THOUGHTS

This is the first book I have read by Colette McBeth and to say I am kicking myself is an under statement. Looking at my bookshelves I have two of her previous books but have never gotten round to reading them, that will definitely be remedied now after reading An Act of Silence.

I was instantly intrigued by the blurb of this book, although I’m not a huge fan of political thrillers there was something about this book that really jumped out at me and I had to read it.

An Act of Silence is so much more than a political thriller though, it’s a story about a mothers love for her son, buried secrets and the lengths some people will go to keep some secrets buried.

Told in alternate voices, An Act of Silence starts with Linda and her son Gabriel. Shocked to find her son in her kitchen one morning asking for help, Linda finds herself in a difficult position. She desperately loves her son but can she really trust he is telling the truth. It’s very clear from the beginning that they have a very fractured relationship and as we find out a bit more about the relationship as Gabriel grew up, I really wasn’t sure if I liked Linda. The story unfolds at quite a fast pace though and it wasn’t long before I warmed to Linda and understood why I wasn’t too sure about her at the beginning.

I’m not going to go over the plot, this is a story that needs to be read without knowing too much detail. It really packs a punch and I’m so pleased that all I had read was the blurb. It really had me on the edge of my seat at some points and there’s quite a few shock factors and jaw dropping moments. The scary thing about this story is it feels very real, with very real feeling characters.

An Act of silence is cleverly written, giving you a real insight into the characters lives. You get to see the same scenario from some characters but through their way of thinking, I have to say I really enjoyed this way of telling a story. It really made the characters seem more realistic, whether it be i liked them or detested them they seemed to jump out the page.

This is definitely a book I will be recommending, it was twisty, shocking and unputdownable. If you like a good psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and  keep you guessing then an Act of silence is one that must be read.
