review 1: This was a good book. It's quite a tome, though, and I didn't have time to finish it all before I returned it. Elena has researched extensively but makes it all rather endearing. It doesn't feel like reading research at all. A lot of Italy's food is wrapped up in its history, so that part of it was certainly enlightening. The rest of it comes, of course, from the unique climates found throughout the country. The book breaks down each region and talks about that region's history and climate.[return][return]I wish I could give more insight, but I enjoyed about the first quarter of this book, and if you are at all interested in food, you will too. I hope to read the rest at a later date.

... moreescribing the nuances of Italian culture and food.Unexpectedly interesting and really well translated by Anne Milano Appel. full of little gems like why the western world has the four tine fork,to how the english word carat for gemweight is traced back to the use of carob seeds as a jewelers counter weight. Mouth watering! Library Loan. less

Read the first couple of chapters and decided it would make a good reference book...

I learned how corn saved thousands of Italians from starving. Thank you, Hapsburgs!

Subject matter, good. Format, good. Writing - a smidge boring. No pictures.

Doesn't live up to its promise -- but some nice photos.
