review 1: This book is a must read for everyone. Eli Pariser lays out what is going on whenever we access the internet, our phones, a credit card and basically everything we use in this modern age to make our lives easier. The short of it is that we are allowing computer intelligence to control our lives. In this age of personalization what we see on our computers doing the same search as our neighbor is completely different. For example if we query to Google: Trojan, I would probably be shown multiple websites for the USC Trojans as I am a big fan, while others would be shown the historical Trojans or the condoms, depending on what a computer algorithm thinks you want to see. Instead of stretching our minds and going outside our comfort zone, the internet shrinks our brains and allo... morews us to see what we want to see. That is not good for creativity or progress. Another problem is the fact that things change so fast that we as people are not able to legislate fast enough to stop the surge in hackers, companies and governments accessing personal information. There are programs now that can pick your face out of a crowd and no where you were at a certain time of the day, or if maybe you aren't telling the truth to your wife that you and a co-worker are "just friends" when she can query the both of you and find you canoodling in a corner at a local bar. For the most part the people in charge of the tech companies are all young and have little life experience outside of college and computers. We are allowing them to be control of the world. Peter Theil, former PayPal inventor and helper of FBI and CIA spy software Palintir has been quoted as saying,"I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible." He is a major shareholder in Facebook and a mentor of Mark Zuckerberg. We need to begin to rein in the technology away from computer owned and have humans check and balance what is really going on before we merge with computers and humanity is on the losing end of the equation.
review 2: The reading of this non fictional book is pleasurable and informative. It tells us that nothing on the net is free, because the companies like Google, Facebook and Amazon are hungry of our data. They will use our personal information, for a future and personalised purchase. This is a good thing and as surfers we are agree with the exploitation of our data.According to Pariser in the future we will be isolated intellectually, because we are trapped on this bubble, which is enveloped only of our tastes and interests. The main risk of the "Filter Bubble" is that we won't know a different point of view, we won't know the existence of a different culture.Fortunately Eli tells us that the human being is unpredictable and the main purpose of the filter bubble will fail, but is it so?In my opinion the most powerful and strong phrase of his book is the following:The human brain evolved in a world in which only humans exhibited rich social behaviors, and a world in which all perceived objects were real physical objects.” Now all that’s shifting. (The Filter Bubble - Eli Pariser)This could be the plot for a Sci - Fi novel, where we will governed by software and algorithms. In this context the real and fictional world will be the same thing, how will be the life of the future generations? less
