review 1: If you want to know what is REALLY going on when you alledgedly search this book will tell you. Google has taken away search, youtube is forcing Suggestions, Facebook is surveilling it's users and experimenting on them. Amazon is forcing Recommendations on us and changing the character of Goodreads.People we have a CRISIS. The Neoliberal ideologues must be panicing to take away the internet as we knew it. This book exposes them. You will find out how the Internet Giants are forcing Filter Bubbles via Personalizaton so that we are forced into separate bubbles who do not cross over to the more anarchic parts of the net. THIS MUST BE RESISTED. THIS BOOK WILL SHOW YOU that we need Digital Environmentalists to reclaim the Ecosystem that is the Net. People R... moreead!!
review 2: The point of this book is that an increasingly personalized Internet experience is fragmenting the culture. We are being led toward confirmation of what we already believe, and, therefore, the promise of the Internet to bring wider and more meaningful unity is not being fulfilled. The point is a powerful one, and the author does bring up some important implications. However, he becomes repetitive and at times pedantic, even alarmist. If we did not have the Internet to reinforce our biases, trust me, we would find something else. Seeking out confirmation of what we already believe is far older than Google. But, as the author points out, part of the power of the selectivity that is going on on our behalf is that we are not fully aware that it is going on. Now we are. For that reason the book is worth reading. less
