review 1: *2.5My least favorite in this series (it's the 3rd book). I still like the characters, especially Ruth in this particular book, but I felt too much was packed into this story that it lacked in quality. These are definitely more than silly or outrageous scenarios the characters find themselves in, but I go into reading them knowing this. The first two I found funny. This one just didn't do it for me. I'll still read the next one. However, I hope Elise Sax takes more time with the plot itself rather than putting too much "craziness" in.
review 2: There's both a new hunky man who has a thing for Gladie in town and a rival for Gladie and Grandma's matchmaking business. Oh yeah, Gladie and pals get locked in a safe room and almost killed then Gladie stumbles over s
... moreomeone who really is dead. Well, two someones.I think this series has a multiple personality disorder. I have read and enjoyed the first two books in the series and I knew what to expect when I requested Love Game from Netgalley (in exchange for an honest review). The series title, The Matchmaker, and the covers indicate romance and the murder solving is almost equally important and I found the first book in the series listed as a mystery. The negative aspect about the romance portion is that Gladie was torn between two men in books 1 and 2 and to further complicate it, there's Remington, man #3 in Love Game. (Remington Cumberbatch, could the author be a Remington Steele fan, it seems to be judging her work, and a Cumberbabe (groupie of actor Benedict Cumberbatch?!?)). None of the three is a true romantic interest since no one wants to commit. The negative about the mystery is that Gladie basically stumbles upon the answer. So, if you are looking for a solid romance or mystery I don't think you'll be completely happy. This series is light and fluffy fun with a touch of flirty romance (only Love Game has actual sex and it's just one night), a minimal, cozy mystery and a touch of the paranormal. I was looking for that, so I was pleased. I hope Sax does NOT pull an Evanovich on us (See The Plum series by Janet Evanovich), and have Gladie bouncing between men (especially when one or more of them doesn't want a permanent relationship and is/are upfront about it)until we want to throw the book at the wall. less
