review 1: 3 or 4 stars? Details of both the fire and watch making were woven in the story neatly. I liked the writing but felt some of the scenes could have captured me better so that as the reader I felt the fire or felt the loss of Frank. I did feel Zack's pain at times. The whole canned peach scene was a great opportunity to "feel" humiliated but it fell short on pulling even a smile from me. I loved the time period and the details!
review 2: A romance that takes place against the background of the great Chicago fire. Mollie inherited her father's watch making business. She has been at it since she was a child. Her business building burns down. Two men emerge, Zack and Colonel Lowe to help her. With Zack she feels like she's in a whirlwind. With Colonel Lowe, sh... moree feels safe and comfortable. Just as she had begun to re-establish her business she hears of a new company making watches by machine that sell for only three dollars. Mollie knows she must find another way of keeping her business but when she thinks of something and even gets a contract for the work, her employees and Colonel Lowe are disapproving. Even Zack refuses to help but then she gets a surprise. Which man in the end will Mollie choose???? less
