review 1: This tale follows the life of Ben, the illegitimate son of Jed and Adelaide, a boy raised in the logging country of disputed lands between England and the United States in the 1800s. The historical setting is true to the time, though the characters are fictional. It's a heartwarming story of unflagging love and determination against the elements and in the face of unsavory men with ill intentions. Very strong on character development, I enjoyed Wilder's portrayal of life in the primitive village and along the river and the interactions between the native Americans, British, and Yankees.
review 2: This is a well written and informative visit to Maine/New Brunswick in the early 19th century. The author puts you there among a crossroads of cultures. The descriptiv
... moree details are wonderful and the characters are hard to forget. The most important common ground among the different cultures is the importance of family. The author draws on her own family history as well as her husband's and, of course, her research. The plot moves the story along, just like the Aroostook River. For those who have never lived in or visited the corners of the United States, it's easy to forget the boundary disputes long after the country was established. But Maine is one of the most beautiful states in the country, and well worth the tribute Elizabeth Wilder has paid it. less

Enjoyed it very much - she must have done a lot of research on the historical background!

I enjoyed the book. It was a nice story but somewhat juvenile, not much depth to it.
