review 1: Elizabeth George's new book took me awhile to get into it but I am very happy that I stuck through the first few chapters. The Edge of Nowhere's protagonist is Becca King, a nearly fifteen year old with a new name, new identity and new locale. Becca is a likable character to spend time with. She struggles to see her own value, alternately trusts and mistrusts new friends and is fiercely loyal to those who help her along the way. She may be able to hear the 'whispers' of others but this is no Edward Cullen. She hates to hear them and spends most of her time trying to tune them out so she is not invading their minds and misjudging them before she meets them. They are also incomplete thoughts and not full stories.I particularly enjoyed the way this book had me wondering who I... more could trust and who I shouldn't trust. Yet this sense of not-quite-knowing was an enjoyable mind game, not a traumatic experience. As you already know I love a dual narrator and this has three. All have there own set of problems and opinions allowing a well rounded and insightful series of events which only add to the tension of who you should trust. In addition to offering a good character in Becca King, The Edge of Nowhere is set on Whidbey Island. I am jealous because my mum is visiting there later this year and I just love to see the real settings of books, especially since the island and it's landscape and character are an integral part of this book. I could imagine the gray skies, the tree lined hills, the quiet, forested woods. Now all I want is to find out what happens. Although I am unable to find out when the second book is being released which only adds to the anticipation and annoyance of why they just can't published a larger book!
review 2: A girl named Hannah has a special ability, the ability to hear the thoughts of others around her. She calls these whispers, as her Grandmother whom she had inherited this gift from had. She uses and AUD box to block them out and offer those around her privacy but when she comes home from school without it on and ends up face to face with her Mom's boyfriend, she finds out his malicious intent for a fellow co-worker. Her and her Mom flee, changing their names, car, location, numbers, everything. Her Mother heads to British Columbia to find somewhere safe for them to live while Hannah is sent to live with her Mothers close friend who has sworn not to say anything. But little did she know, the women would be dead when she arrived. What would she do from there? There's only one way to find out.The book Edge Of Nowhere I sadly have to give three stars. As I read I could tell the Author was very skilled in her writing as I was drawn in by that most definitely. But where I'd say she failed was in the development and creation of her characters. Most severely one dimensional, to the point where I can categorize their their roles in a stereotypical matter. 'Aside from the bad things about the book I loved the story line. At some points it could get a little lost, hitting a few walls but other then that I loved the fog of mystery that settled over the entire book. less
