Inspector Lynley
review 1: An unusual Inspector Lynley story, this one. Without wanting to give too much away, there is no actual murder in the book. In fact the crimes which are encountered are incidental to the original investigation. Roughly, Lynley is asked to go to North England to investigate a death ruled as an accident, but which a friend of the Assistant Commissioner is afraid may have been caused by his (the friend's) son. It's tough to talk much about the book without spoilers, but the investigation into the accident exposes the dark side of the family being investigated, which leads to various other complicated plots. I felt that the book, while very enjoyable, was more to progress the arc of Lynley's reationship (with his boss) and that of the St Jameses (will they have a child?). So ... morea good read, and the ending is even a set up for the next book, with a kind of cliffhanger ending. A strange book from Elizabeth George.
review 2: Once again, Elizabeth George needs an editor! This book seemed familiar but I don't think I read it previously. The plot with the boy Tim added nothing to the story and could have been eliminated. Tommy is told by Sir David Hillier to investigate a family death in Cumbria that was determined to be an accident. He can't operate in official capacity so he takes Deborah and Simon with him. Isabelle is furious that he won't tell her what he's doing. She's also paranoid. I was so happy to see the end of this affair. Tommy and Simon determine that the accident truly was an accident but in doing so the family is thrust into a turmoil - affairs, a secret family, hush money, blackmail. Deborah is on her own investigation of another of the family members. Her inability to become pregnant has her seeing things with the wife of the black sheep son. Even though Simon and Tommy tell her to stop, she won't. Her stubbornness ends in the accidental death of the wife who tries to run away. Barbara does some work for Tommy and Isabelle discovers and reacts violently. There's also a sub plot with Barb's neighbor and the mother of his child who turns up. Barb is caught up in the adoration of Angelina who helps transform Barbara's image. But when Angelina leaves with her daughter and Azhar is devastated, Barbara destroys her new flattering haircut. Barbara is such a strange character. Her poor self-image is so odd combined with her confidence as a cop. The story line with Simon and Deborah isn't closed. He still wants to adopt and she still wants a surrogate. less

This series is running out of steam for me. Loved the earlier books. This? Not so much.
