review 1: After seeing this title on a "Best Reads of 2013" list from my favorite mystery book store, Aunt Agatha's in Ann Arbor MI, I picked it up along with the others on the list. After reading the covers and reviewer blurbs, it sat until I finished all the others. I finally read it, had no trouble finishing it, but now I don't have much to say about it. Available Dark had no characters with whom I could empathize/identify, revealed too much information through dialogue, explored a punk music scene I am evidently too old to care about, delved into the practice of pagan rituals without developing reasons the characters were drawn to such practices (other than the desolate, frigid Nordic setting) , etc.
review 2: This was a pretty good book. It's a very quick, suspensef
... moreul, and intriguing read. It's mysterious and creepy too. I really liked it but parts of it didn't seem very well written and other parts were a little too gruesome for my liking...like the part where a murdered person was described as "his face caved in like a rotting pumpkin." The Jolasveinar photo sequence was also very interesting and mysterious but gruesome. All in all, it was a pretty good read, though I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a sensitive stomach as parts of it are very graphic...and don't read it in bed at night. ;) less

Dark is right. There is nothing enjoyable about this book. not the character, not the plot.
