review 1: I kept waiting for something to happen. Something, anything. Some sort of explanation, of background information, of revelation, of turning point... Instead, this book went on to be as flat as it had started. NOTHING happens. When I turned the last page, I asked myself "What was the point of this book?"... not a good sign. The style was also irritating at times, with an excessive use of the present tense, as though the reader wouldn't be clever enough to understand what was going on if the author used any other tense.I felt no sympathy, no empathy, no involvement towards any of the characters - except for Maggie, the dog. The only feeling I experienced was frustration: more than once, I found myself wanting to slap Isabelle in the face for being such a little spoilt brat.I... more don't think I'll read anything else by this author.
review 2: 2.5 stars.I started off not liking this, then warmed up to it. It struck me as pretty creepy--the oddly forgetful dad, the bitter mom, the passive-aggressiveness of both. The silent daughter.I was sure there would be some awesome, creepy twist (why were they gone when the squirrel got in? why had dog been boarded for days? what's with Belle's nightmares?). But, no. Nothing. It took 50 pages for me to get into, then I couldn't put it down, and then it just fizzled out.Disappointing. less
