review 1: Instinct and intent. These are the two overriding concepts woven through The Light of Asteria. Instinct is when you listen to the small voice inside you, directing your actions. The voice that is not dominated by wants and needs. Most times in this hectic world, the noise of our existence drowns out the voice and we can no longer clearly hear it. And intent because it isn't enough to do things because it is the right thing to do, we must do them with the right intentions or the acts themselves are tarnished. How much better off would this world be should we start listening to instinct and acting with the purest of intentions? The Light of Asteria opens in the Appalachians, an area of the country which has always held a fascination for me. Nora starts her life with little, a... morend little expectation for having more. Having a mother who died in child birth and a father who became an alcoholic and put her in foster care, Nora Johnson would seem to have reason to be bitter about life. Her best friends have just gone off to college together, without her, and she's stuck at home with her foster mother Edna, attending the local community college, and working in a mom & pop hardware store. But instead, Nora chooses to focus on how much better her life has been with Edna, someone who truly loves her for who she is, and considers herself a survivor. The survivor mentality has gotten her this far in life, and she expects it to get her through the rest.Without a doubt, my favorite parts of The Light of Asteria are the descriptions of Edna's mountain and the life on it and the last pure land--which I'm not going to say too much about because of potential spoilers. Isaacs gift of description brings the settings to life and the settings become much like a character. My favorite character? Edna--no question. This woman in her sixties took in a "difficult" child and raised her in a loving atmosphere, and helped Nora retain a core of purity which becomes so important later on in the book. How can you not like a woman who runs down a slip & slide in her sixties?Overall, Elizabeth Isaacs has penned a well-imagined tale fraught with beauty, innocence, evil, and adventure. There were a few mechanical issues which bounced me out of the story at times, but those aside, The Light of Asteria was an enjoyable read for a debut novel and leaves us with a message of hope. I am looking forward to reading the additional books in this trilogy.
review 2: This was an action packed story filled with epic battles, intrigue and romance. I was completely engrossed in the plot and the richness of the characters. Once again here is an author telling an orginal tale, with characters that are not your average everyday Vampire/Werewolf or Witch. Ms. Isaacs delievered with a thick intense plot and well rounded characters that left you begging for more. Gavin, Nora and their families, the amount of dedication they have for each other was touching. They make you feel like your part of their family.Nora, with one touch, started down a path that would bring her to her true destiny. Gavin fills Nora's thoughts, she can't seem to stop thinking of him, then he shows up in her home town. They form a relationship, though Nora feels that Gavin is hiding something she doesn't let that stand in way of getting closer to him. She has always felt like there is more to everything, more to her. Her Grandmother's health doesn't seem good and there is a connection between Gavin's family and a boy her Grandmother used to know. Nora learns some of Gavin's secrets but knows there is more she has yet to be told. When a creature smelling of rancid air and rot fills her head with doubt, tension forms between the two, causing unbearable pain. Can Nora trust Gavin or is he just using her for his own pleasure? After an attack from the Dokkalfar, they leave their haven to head back to their own kingdom. At the portal between worlds Nora is left with Rena and Tark, to await Gavin's return. The water passage gets distroyed by Nora's carelessness while she was trying to contact Gavin. She is devistated with the damage she has wraught. Tark asks her to help repair the portal with her powers, and she agrees. Upon talking to the portal, the water drags Nora to its depths and sparks a transformation in her that no one expects. Tark goes through the passage to tell Gavin that it is working again and that everyone is fine, when Nora starts to feel the presence of the Dokkalfar. Over the next few days Rena, Nora and the valley creatures try to hold back the wave of Dokkalfar, waiting on help from Gavin. There is an epic battle and with the help of the Mighty Oak, they manage to stop the Dokkalfar from gaining passage through the portal. But will Nora ever see Gavin again, or is it all lost to her. Her future is on the line, will she have the power to fullfil her destiny, or will she break, losing everyone she cares about?I loved the world Ms. Isaacs created, it is a magical world filled with ancient creatures that will have you amazed. I was awed by the description, by the sheer passion on each page. Ms. Isaacs has such affection for her characters that you can feel it in every chapter she has written. The love, doubt and misery felt by Nora, draws you in and chews you up inside. I loved this book, it was an emotional roller coaster, grab yourself a copy. less
