Whisper Falls
review 1: A strong first novel by Langston, this fantasy deals with a mystical location where a young man from the present encounters a young woman who's an indentured servant in 1796. The chapters are written from their alternating perspectives. Through their growing friendship, we learn more about the life of female indentured servants in this era, and the challenges they face. Recommended for 14 and up, due to the abuse Susanna suffers from her master.
review 2: This was an excellent young adult book... part romance, part historical fiction, part time travel... smartly written and such an engaging story. I felt like I learned so much about indentured servants and life in that time period. There were a couple times where the book took my breath away with a surprise or
... moretwist. My 12 year old devoured this in about 24 hours. She could not pull herself away! The second book comes out on Tuesday, and we are both anxious to read it. less
