review 1: Elizabeth Pisani is witty, scathing, funny and knowledgeable about what she writes in The Wisdom of Whores. The book threads its way through her experiences of gathering blood samples from prostitutes, gay men, their clients and drug injectors across Asia and also lays bare the stupidity of governmental policies in preventing and treating AIDS. The revelations are startling. She is an epidemiologist with a sharp tongue. Here’s a glimpse. At a conference she listens to a speaker stupidly explain that poverty, wide inequality gaps were the reasons for the spread of HIV. The speaker was obviously circumventing the ‘sex’ word. She says, “I stuck up my hand and asked it. 'Mead, where's the hard-on in your formula?'" Of brothels and bureaucracies, Wisdom of Whores is int... moreelligent, funny and startling. An important read.
review 2: An eye-opening book about how the world has been responding to the HIV and AIDS crisis, particularly in developing countries. The author brought to my attention things I guess I had never considered - including explaining why there is such a divide between who is infected in richer compared with poorer nations. It also slightly infuriated me that governments responded wrongly, such as refusing to fund clean needle programmes as you wonder how many more people could have been saved if they had.I would love for the author to write an update on how HIV projects have changed in the last few years, as the book goes up to about 2008. less
