review 1: I read Ellen Gilchrist for years before visiting and working in Arkansas. Now that I've spent time there, I appreciate her writing on a different level. I was excited to see something new from this great writer, but was disappointed overall. I do appreciate the reconnection with old characters, but as a whole the collection lacked the familiarity and voice that was so important in earlier Gilchrist work.
review 2: Ellen Gilchrist is one of my favorite authors and has been since college. Her protagonists are generally spunky, sassy and often a little naughty. This book is a detour from that as she explores issues related to aging, through the lens of people's responses to "acts of God." Many of the characters felt defeated to me, though I don't believe this w... moreas her intent. I think I may have had a developmental mismatch with this one. less
