How Special a Book?

For me, there are a really few things that supersede the joy of owning a book. Or books. A lot of books. To be able to hold a book, nestle it closely in your arms and to know that it belongs to you forever is sometimes, well, enough.

So how do you top this feeling after all? Don’t know about you, but for me, designing my own book covers and illustrations seemed like a palatable start. My latest project as an artist ( of sort, always remember) hence, is creating customized book covers or rather, my very own book art. I’ve started with some of the books which are special to me, naturally, and I hope to continue doing this not just for myself, but for every reader around me who believes in the power and wonder of words.

Here are a few of them for you:

1.

Find out more about the book at http://www.neilgaiman.com/works/Books/Fragile+Things/

The book exemplifies Gaiman’s storytelling brilliance as well as his terrifyingly entertaining dark sense of humor. By turns delightful, disturbing, and diverting, Fragile Things is a gift of literary enchantment from one of the most unique writers of our time.

Making this was one of the most delightful experiences for me, although, definitely not even remotely as delightful as reading the book itself. Again and again. and again. 42 times. (If you know what I mean)

3.

Read about the book here: http://www.harukimurakami.com/book/kafka-on-the-shore/

For all the inexplicable feelings, grey matter and seamless dreaming in the fabric of reality and unreality, there is always a Murakami novel. One of the most celebrated works of his, Kafka on the Shore stirs more than what you understand and for me,an eternal feeling I carry in the unsettled territories of my heart. This artwork is an attempt to express the same.

4.

Also a feature film now, but you probably already know that? WatchTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2_aFNDwuaM

To be honest I’m not particularly fond of this one, but the book remains special to me. The self-consciously lyrical comment from the book’s narrator sets the tone for the whole piece. This is a novel about Pakistan, about political violence, about growing up rich and comfortable in a land that is always on the edge of riot and despair. But it’s also about a friendship that is predestined to turn into love.

6.

The Illustration is inspired from the Netflix adaptation of American Gods. You can take a look at its trailer: https://www.google.co.in/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj4_5qD78vYAhUJKo8KHUXcCUYQtwIILTAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dz6HLeNl8DOs&usg=AOvVaw3XZkjwuQlHQIUiqNb-lCga

Last but not the least, and probably my favorite is this cover for American Gods which is again a Gaiman novel. As it might be evident, I made this for a friend and gave her a copy of the book with this as the cover.  This is the most important book I have read in my life till now. And that’s all I’d say.
