review 1: The Birthday Pet by Ellen Javernick was silly and relatable at the same time. I really enjoyed how the little boy could have any pet he wanted and he just wanted a turtle. His mom, dad and other people in his family insisted he get a different animal. I thought it was funny how every animal bothered the birthday boy in some way. I liked how the little boy finally got what he wanted at the end and could not be more happy. The image at the end with each family member struggling with the animal they tried to make him get was clever and ironic. This story would be entertaining in a kindergarten classroom because all the children could relate to wanting something so badly and not be able to get it at first. Also the use of rhyming and suspense throughout the story would keep th... moree children involved and excited. Even though the boy in the book was young he knew what he wanted.
review 2: Oh my word. He gets a TURTLE for his birthday!? Brilliant. This book was made for my birthday-theme storytime. :-) (Not that I want a real turtle, mind you, but all the same...) I think this will be a fun story to add to the theme, especially the way it goes about getting Danny's present. I like seeing how all the family chips in and how each pet goes with the characters' personalities. There was rhyming to keep the text going, but sometimes it was a bit off. Oh well. I hope this will be a good addition.9/26/12 & 9/27/12: Fun book. The Wed. crowd really enjoyed it. Loved guessing what he would get next--and did pretty well from the context clues in the pictures. Only the adults got the rhyming part. The Thu. crowd was very quiet and didn't respond as much to my questions, but definitely liked seeing the pictures. The text flowed better for me when I read it. And they were all happy to see Danny finally get a turtle. less
