review 1: I just finished reading this book. I feel as though you could skip the first 14 chapters and still have more than an understanding of what is going on. The beginning of the book is far to descriptive and you'll get bored with it all. I like to imagine the setting in my head but it was WAY to much. I didn't have a problem with the little love story because we don't know much about the 17 years before the book started. It was a different time back then so I believe they could love each other the way they did. The book finally picked up when your about 60% of the way through. You'll get into how the camp is and what she does to stay alive but then the author unlike the beginning of the book speeds through the rest of the book. The parts you want to learn more about are skippe... mored over in a rush. It's not a terrible book but there are better ones out there about this time period.
review 2: WWII Germany, a Christian girl in love with a Jewish boy, you know it is going to be a sad story. I was really fascinated by the amount of detail about ordinary German life before and during the war. The main character comes from a family who is totally against the Nazi agenda, yet has no choice but to appear to conform. It is certainly a different perspective to remember that when the sweet German children are hiding from the bombs, it is the Americans who are dropping them. I did like this story, but the description of the camps will keep you up at night. less
